In September Mum was very excited when some good friends offered us the chance to house-sit their beautiful home close to David’s place. We installed ourselves and settled in for a three-week holiday.

David and I were able to live together while Mum had the granny flat and access to the magnificent garden which delighted her. It was idyllic. My brother and his family stayed for a few days while David and I went off to The Yorkshire Dales for the wedding of a close friend of mine.

When we got back to our holiday abode, Mum reminded me that we had talked about the sheltered housing complex that had recently been completed in a nearby town. She was curious to see what it was like, fantasising that one day she might be ready to consider living in such a place. Now, I realised, the time for procrastination was over.

We drove along the country lanes to a really attractive modern building with pretty gardens. Everything was geared up for people with disabilities. We bumped into the manager who offered to show us one of the flats. I wheeled Mum in and, straight ahead, through the large windows, she was faced with the view.

‘Look at the magnificent mountain!’ Mum was enchanted. ‘Look at the kitchen and the walk-in shower!’
